During my time as a student leader I have:
• Developed skills that I will be able to transfer to other aspects of my life and to my future career, including leadership skills, critical thinking/analysis skills and my ability to network.
• Enjoyed working with like-minded people . Also, I enjoyed gaining insight into different perspectives and how these can both impact, and vary, the student experience.
• Worked as part of a team that helped to identify issues that could potentially be barriers to student academic success, increase students’ sense of belonging and increase student engagement.
• Equality, diversity and inclusion has always been an area of interest to me. This provided the perfect opportunity to gain insight into working within this field.

Why I would recommend working as a student leader:
• To experience being part of something different.
• It is a paid opportunity with flexible hours that can be scheduled around university life.
• This provides the opportunity for self-development. It enabled me to become more disciplined and aided my time management.
• Ultimately, to see effective changes being made, we need the input of current students who can share their lived experiences. The insight gained from current students is crucial, as this is not something that academic staff alone can envision. Become a student leader and be a part of the change that you want to see in the world.

During my time as a student leader I have:
• Opportunity to lead a team of students as a Race Equality Advisor for the faculty of HLS. Over the course of the year, I attended meetings with a variety of staff and student groups all working as part of Decolonising DMU and discussed viable solutions to improve BAME attainment and experience.
• The experience to understand the range of socioeconomic, cultural, and systemic barriers that underpin the BAME student experience.
• Involved with Engagement team in creating student surveys, questionnaires and programme-specific interventions that would facilitate inclusive education for all students regardless of their background.
• Looked closely at representation in HLS courses and how minor amendments in course content could be the first step in reconciling the large attainment gap that exists between BAME students and their white counterparts.

Why I would recommend working as a student leader:
• Be open and honest about your student experience.
• Expect to meet a broad variety of students from various backgrounds so always be friendly and open to listen.
• Enjoy the process! It is all a learning curve at the end of the day and an opportunity to do things outside of your course.
